Diabetes- Induced Hearing Impairment : Understanding the link and overview
Diabetes induced hearing loss
mainly cause by diabetes mellitus . 30 percent of diabetes mellitus patients
experience hearing loss . Diabetes patients are 2x more likely to develop
hearing loss. High blood sugar level causes damage to delicate cells .
Oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to hearing loss . Diabetes affect
the nerve signals from inner ear to brain causing hearing loss, Diabetes causes
thickening of blood vessels in inner ear .
Hearing problems caused by
diabetes - Presbycusis hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss , tinnitus,
auditory neuropathy spectrum disorder
Symptoms of hearing loss - not able to detect speech , increased volumes
etc. hence protecting our ears is importnat
People with diabetes can do ? Preventive measures - hearing aids, aural
rehabilitation, diabetes management
Role of nutrition to prevent hearing loss : Magnesium, zinc , omega 3
fatty acids , vitamin D , vitamin A C E, vitamin b 9 ( folate) intake,
Audio meter can be carried if required. Temporary hearing loss can be treated but
permanent hearing loss is irreversible
High levels of glycaemia causes hearing loss. When have high or low blood glucose levels
both leads to hearing loss. Diabetes patients have widened blood capillary, the
blood supply to cochlea is reduced causing hearing impairment. Even Chemotherapy
leads to oto toxicity hearing loss
and not usually antibiotics. Clinically
studied nutrients with antioxidant properties may help to treat or prevent
hearing loss .
Having foods like broccoli, lettuce , pumpkin seeds , walnuts , fish , sweet potato and avocado .
Lean animal protein and dairy products also provide enough blood flow. If
diabetes is detected patient can visit an audiologist.
